Hey all,
We have a small acreage with an orchard and pond in the foothills of the Cascades in Washington state. I toyed with the idea of chickens, but never really took the time to pursue it until lock down in spring of 2020. In lock down, and with plenty of time to commit, we did just that, and built a brooder, then a small house, and then a luxury cabin for the ladies. Little did I know I would come to absolutely adore chickens. Last spring I bought 5 more hens of different breeds, but lost one of the Australorps when still small. Then a roving domestic dog killed one of my favorite speckled hens, so now I have 11. They are a comfort to me. I take great pride in selling their eggs at the local feed store. I enjoy making them happy and healthy, and I miss them when I'm gone.

This sounds pretty schmaltzy, but chickens have changed me. I can sit for long periods of time just watching them be in the now, or pet them while they sit happily in my lap. I am a true organic farmer now, because nothing toxic can hit the ground - for their sakes. I am hyper aware of other animals, the weather, human behavior in general, and myself in particular. My life is slower now. I'm learning to live life completely in my natural state.
And - buyer beware - I now want a cow and some sheep.
