We are entering our third year as backyard chicken farmers. We currently have seven Easter Eggers (was ten, lost three to a hawk last winter). The plan was to provide eggs for the family. Egg production seems to have come to a halt this winter (last winter, we got eggs all winter long). So, this flock may be making it's way to the freezer before too long. This spring we would like to start fresh, possibly with a variety of breeds. We are leaning towards Australorps and something else. Our chickens have an enclosed pen, and access to a fenced in area where we keep the compost piles.
We also have one large dog (who is very helpful at rounding up escaped birds), and three working cats (no mice/rats/etc. in our yard or house!).
Found BYC while researching the possibility of raising a mixed flock.
I had hoped to get a single gosling to raise as a 'watch dog', but that is proving harder than I thought. Places that sell birds do not offer single geese.
