Welcome to BYC!! Beautiful birds!Hello everyone! New member here! I have had chickens for 3 years and a half, hand raised them. Bought 11 of them three years and a half ago when they were a day old, and hatched out 2 new chicks last spring. Out of those 11, re-home one of them since I ended up with 2 roosters and unfortunately lost a hen to being eggbound.
I currently have 11 chickens. I have 2 Rhode Island Red hens and a RIR Rooster, I have 5 Leghorn hens, 1 Gold sex-linked hen, and 2 Red sex-linked hens. My favorite aspect of raising chickens is observing and interacting with them. They are full of personality and so fun to be around, besides laying delicious eggs. I enjoy cooking and baking, hiking, hunting, reading books and animal behavior observation. I have a Black and Tan Coonhound/Bloodhound 4 year old dog, he is my hike partner and loves sleeping beside the chicken run, he loves supporting the hens when they lay eggs, he attempts to howl in the same pattern of the egg laying chorus. I am currently working towards my Vet Major, always had a big passion towards animals and working with livestock is my main goal. My mother says she is not a big fan of chickens, even though I have seen her separating fruits and vegetable scraps and giving it to the chickens. There is a Leghorn who loves my mom and is always waiting at the gate when my mom goes out, they are very curious. All the chickens have names, we just do not know which one is which. The Gold sex-linked is named Goldie, courtesy of my younger sister. The RIR hens are named Brownie, and the Leghorn hens are named according to the direction their comb flips, like flipsy, flopsy etc. The Red sex-linked hens are named Drumstick and Popcorn, fortunately I am able to tell them a part. My rooster is called "I know". When we got the RIR it was a straight run, "I know" was the first one to develop, and at 4 weeks I knew for sure it was a rooster, his brother had a hen behavior until 16 weeks, his name was "idk", because I could not tell if it was a rooster until he was fully grown.
I found out about BYC by research, every time I ran into a question I would search in the BYC because I believe that people with experience on the subject have the best understanding. What finally made me join after 4 years is that I received a beautiful rooster visitor on my property today and I wish to know what breed or mix he could be because I cannot tell.

Thank you! He is handsome indeed unless he is molting. There were times looked like he was inside a washing machine or something lol poor thingWelcome! Your RIR is a handsome fella
my RIR is like that. We're still able to hold her, but she definitely lets you know that she isn't enjoying the attention lolThank you! Yes that is true, I have one Leghorn that is an oddball. She likes her space, and she reminds me of that antisocial cousin everyone has.
