Hi. I am a relatively new chicken owner located in the foothills west Denver in Evergreen. I am currently in the unenviable position of partially rebuilding my flock. A fox attack pretty much decimated my silkies. All I have left is two white pullets. We have located the weakness in our pen and corrected/reinforced it. The foxes returned and discovered that they are unable to get in, so I am ready to get new silkies. I am looking for pullets in all the silkie color spectrum. I also had one roo, a blue/lavender (at least that's what I saw) with a white head. I don't necessarily need a rooster, he was just very pretty and pretty fun to be around. My white silkies were 7 weeks old when I started introducing them to my flock so I would like to find juveniles about that age. Please contact me if you have any silkies that would fit my needs.
Other than the silkies, I have 19 laying hens (Silver Lace Wyandottes, Buff Orpingtons, Ameraucanas, Black Australorps, etc.), 3 turkeys and 2 geese. I sell a few eggs, but mostly donate them to the local food kitchen. They really appreciate the eggs. I guess not too many people donate eggs.
I actually got into the chickens in order to get over my fear of them. (My grandmother's chickens seemed to think I was food and constantly pecked me. Later in life, I lived near game chickens and was attacked repeatedly by them.) My husband and I have become avid chicken watchers. We find ourselves standing by the fence wondering what possessed that hen to run madly across the pasture with the rest of the flock following her. We find them relaxing and entertaining.
Protecting them has been an issue. We live in an area of foxes, coyotes, bears and mountain lions. They all run on about a half-acre area all day, then spend a short time in a secured (finally!) pen until they go in the coop for the night. We have made some costly (mostly in terms of our hearts) mistakes, but think we have corrected any deficiencies in our pens/coops.
Would like to hear from others in the area.
