Welcome to BYC!(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? We got some chicks in the mail March of 2021. My husband has had chickens before but this was all new to me
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? As of Jan 2022 we have 45 hens and 5 roosters. There are also 23 shorties that are 3 mo old now
(3) What breeds do you have? Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, 2 white/black feather footed hens and some other randoms that came from an assortment or were the “mystery” chick from our original order.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? There are no dull moments! I’ve never seen what chickens do all day. Who knew they roll around in dirt?! Not me! And they are adorable when they stretch out their legs (esp when they are little). Also fun to learn about brooding…sheesh those ladies get feisty! We had two hens go broody - one went missing and reappeared with 11 babies a few weeks later and the other broody was so viscious that I stopped trying to get her to move. I gave her a pen to herself and she was happy as a clam. She gave us 9 beautiful chicks and was a fantastic mother hen
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? We have goats too - they are equally as fun! I enjoy knitting, audiobooks, sewing, flying stunt kites, antiquing and several other things I can’t think of right now. Between a full time job, a kid and the animals there isn’t a whole lot of other hobbies goin on here lol
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. During the day I repair band instruments. It’s a small and amazing industry. I have tech friends all over the country - we keep in touch by sending pictures to each other - “hey check out this sax that got run over by grandmas SUV!”.
We have 3 outside cats (Bobo, Lucy and Veronica) and an outside dog (Sadie). There are 13 goats and 6 new kids!
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I’ve known about the site for a couple months. Found it through random searches online. I had a chick hatch with an extra long neck and messed up feet. I tried everything. He has since passed but I am very thankful I found this site as I have already learned a lot and am sometimes overwhelmed by all the info but I’m guessing it’s just bc this is all new to me! Thank you for hosting this site and for everyone that participates! I look forward to hearing about your trials, solutions and all the ups and downs of the chicken world
I do plan to sell something - either eggs for eating, for incubating or I can raise the chicks up a bit. I’m willing to do what folks prefer - new to all of this and love everything so I don’t really care whichever. Makes it much easier for me if folks just want eggs. Incubators are great but I’ve found that broody hens are way better (and less work for me!). Having baby chicks around is so fun - I love seeing them learning to be a chicken!Hello and welcome girl. What a busy life! That's a LOT of chickensand I agree the legs stretches are the best, and dust baths ! Are you planning on selling eggs? Enjoy your time here there's lots to learn for sure
