New Member- live in the land of chickens. Bird Doctor.

Hello, I live is the USVI (Virgin Islands)

(1) I’m new to keeping chickens myself! I just got my first chicks recently, but I have extensive experience with birds in general. But I have raised hundreds of birds from eggs. (not a joke).

(2) I have three (chicken) chicks right now. The coop being built can hold more- but I am constantly changing the design (hubby is exhausted by my changes- haha).

(3) Rhode Island Reds (RIR). But Feral birds here- ill save you the details but are every 20 feet- even though I live in the 'countryside' far east end.

(4) I’m still new to raising chickens, but so far, I enjoy watching their curious personalities develop. As someone deeply involved in avian care for decades, I also find it fascinating to observe their natural behaviors up close.

(5) My hobbies revolve around birds—both my own flock and writing about parrot care and advising client around the world. I also garden (pretty intensely on many levels), grow a variety of unique foods- and cook/can even more, experiment with tropical flavors (sometimes in ridiculously spicy hot sauces).

(6) I live in the Virgin Islands and have two free-flying parrots: Dimitri, my Eclectus, and Lucia, my Northern Mealy Amazon. I’m a former veterinarian with a strong passion for avian behavior and nutrition. My Mealy Amazon is a bit of a wild card in the household dynamics and thus far wants to nub them- as they are still in their brooder, and my Eclectus is going through a hormonal phase, so things are... interesting. The addition of chickens is a whole new adventure!

(7) I’ve known about BYC for a while but finally joined because I figured it would be a great resource as I start this new journey with chickens. I also enjoy connecting with other bird enthusiasts!

That kinda sums it up? Oh! and I designed my home, and acres for birds and their sanctuary. I am most interested in coop designs- as I keep running myself in circles.

Thanks for your consideration
Oooo! Welcome! I can tell you will be a treasure-trove of information (for me, at least). Would love to see your parrots.

I've always had small, pet birds. But, we now have (from the time she was a baby) a 13 year-old umbrella cockatoo. She runs this household. 😁 We nearly lost her, 2 summers ago, when she became egg-bound (her first egg). Fortunately, I had read about the condition from this group and recognized what she was suffering from. We have no avian vets nearby. I called the tropical store manager from which we ordered her. He offered suggestions, and I was able to help her.

I'm going to give you a follow, if you don't mind. Just so I don't miss any important tidbits you might mention that could pertain to our girl. We have many very knowledgeable chicken keepers in this group. They're a contant well of information. I'd be lost without them.

Thank you for the warm welcome! I appreciate the nuances of chicken care, especially since I primarily work with psittacines and passerines—ranging from macaws to finches. My specialty is in avian dietary and veterinary medicine. If you ever have any questions, feel free to ask! I run a nonprofit focused on avian care, and I’m always happy to help.

Welcome! 🤗 I'm sure you're going to be an asset to our extended world-wide flock!! 🌸☺️

Welcome to BYC! Love your little flock.
You asked about color of one of the chicks. I am very far from being an expert but observe in my own flock that they change from molt to molt. I had a RIR that got lighter and more golden each year, and my Crested Cream Legbar emerged this season much darker.

Appreciate the reply! Really crossing my fingers that she stays on the lighter side (the others are rocking way more black markings).

Buuuut... I designed a sign for the coop, and my husband took one look at it and said, "Uh... all your birds are brown. That chicken doesn’t even look like them!" 😆 And remember the law of seven (he believes people need seven of everything- seven pairs of pants, seven surfboards, etc, etc)

He was joking, buuutt... I completely gave in and did exactly what I swore I wouldn’t—I ordered six mystery mix hatching eggs. Blue, green, pink—because, let’s be real, I wasn’t about to settle for an all-brown lineup. Plus, seeing all those flashy feral flocks around town definitely sparked a little envy!

Now, we wait and see if they survive the journey!

sigh I swear, I have the attention span of a goldfish—give me space, and I will find a way to fill it. 😂

Thank you very much.

Not too concerned. Birds are my life, Im very good at reading them, and parrots dont peck ;) In the photo she was licking me. Trying to preen my eyebrow.

I have had over a few hundred birds- not chickens- but parrots. So I think im okay.
Whoa! Over 100? And I thought we were bad with two macaws and a pair of parakeets. :)
