I guess ya'll already know you're the "go to" place for friendly chicken advice ... have had this place bookmarked for so long, always reading and chuckling along with ya about the quirkiness of our birds ... and sympathetic when things don't go so well.

So here's my story:

Had my first intro to chickens as a little kid in suburb of a big city ... against the city rules, but Dad let us keep two Easter present chicks, a little red hen and a dominique rooster as long as we could ... moved to the country when I was a teen and we raised a couple hundred white rocks every year to sell eggs to the local grocery store and provide Sunday dinner for the family.

Fast forward a bunch, and for the past 15 or so years I've raised lots of different farm fowl - breeds and species. Some ask me how many birds we have, and I tell them it'll take me awhile cause they're all named and I'm better at faces than numbers. I'm thinking we have about 33 chickens (hens and roosters) and five chicks right now. That's just a good guess. I also have ducks, geese, guineas, and quail ... and dogs, cats, goats, a bunny and two goldfish. Oh, and the two-legged family.

Poultry breeds (right now) include Australorps, Jersey Giants, Lt. Brahmas, Red Stars, Americana bantams, Gray Japanese bantam, Red Frizzle Cochin, Black Cochin, and an assortment of rescues and "hey, look what I found on Craig's List" including Dominiques, RIRs, Partridge, White Rocks, and a few "mystery" breeds. We found some funky one-eyed gals that deserved to live their lives out rather than be stew ... and we've rescued a few Tyson farm strays that were bright enough to escape the meat transpo truck, but not smart enough to eat bugs or drink water out of a puddle. My favorite breeds include Lakenvelders (Hubby calls them Lincoln Welders) and Blue Andalusians. Not the friendliest - a little gamey - but just stunning to look at. Don't have them right now - and it's just cause a lot of "life" got in the way of hunting some down this spring.

Anyway ... don't know how often I'll bump in here ... but if I see a question I might have come across the answer to, I'll certainly pass it on. I am a storyteller at heart, so bear with me if I tend to ramble on ... and on ... and on ....
