We began our experience in 2019 with 12 Chics. That got whittled down to 6 by summer, a few Chics died, our dog played with one a-little too much, hawk got 2 ect.. come October my son went down to feed Chics and a Fox got in the coup and wiped out 4 of our Chics. And then while they were out side the Fox got another and we were down to one and the Fox got that one too. We just had a little coup. So, the next year we ordered 20, fixed our big coup on side of barn, put a big chicken run attached and a net on top for those pesky hawks. Stuck the little coup in the run. We still have most of our chickens from the 2nd yr. About October the Fox get so bad in our area that we have to keep them in the run and we only leave them out 1/2 hr before the sun goes down on different days. They don’t like it so much but it saves them from being a foxes or hawks meal. Last year we got more Chics, Marans and leghorns. This year we got 45 more to add to our 25. We have, barred rocks, leghorns, midnight majestic marans, prairie, olive eggers, polish silver, golden wyadottes, red island red, Colombian wyadottes, Easter egger, sapphire splash, salmon favorelle, black Australorps, buff Orpingtons, Americana, blue laced golden wyadottes, welsummer, bielefelder, cream legbars, silver lakenvelder, starlight green egger, and 2 we are unsure what they are we got from TSC that were on sale for 2.00 and were unknown...Have to find out when the grow up more. Maybe Americana but not sure...we have 2 silkies and 7 bantams 2 of which are Roos. So we have quite a mix. I have dealt with it all with our chickens. From fixing gashes from foxes, mites, bad feet feathers, broken toe nails that gush, prolapsed vent (broken butt we call it) it’s been a wild ride...but we made it. And thanks to this form I knew what to do. Never in a million years would I have thought I would be sticking my finger up a chickens butt to put its butt back in...lmao felt so bad because she had icicles hanging off her butt. Brought her in de iced her butt and cleaned it with dawn. Stuck her butt back in and put her in the chicken hospital. She laid good and pooped and ate although she is the skinny leghorn compared to the rest. So, after 2 days we stuck her back out with the clan. Few days later she popped again and had icicles again. Brought her back in and repeated with prep H. She seemed fine again and took her back out. A couple days later she was walking funny and her butt iced up again. So I brought her in washed her completely with dawn. Gave her oyster shells, and prep H Ed her butt. We have Chics now so I put the chicken hospital near the heat lamp to dry her up and gave her water and oyster shells only. And wrapped her in a towel. Kept her in for 2 days/3 nights Aft. One day a she didn’t pop I gave her some food on 2nd day. She pooped, layed an egg and didn’t pop her butt. So I waited till next morning before I left the other Chics out of coup and put her in the run. Seemed to work better for her she didn’t lose her pecking order that way. It’s been a week and every night I check her butt and she seems all better. The oyster shells seemed to help a lot..the only difference I did the 3 rd time. Thanks for all the advise!
