Hi everybody at BYC! I just joined. I am new to the chicken world and haven't yet purchased my own little peepers. I am quite certain that chickens would be an awesome addition to our household. However, my dad isn't as excited as the rest of us are. What can I tell him that might change his mind? He wants our pets to be easy to care for, so is there anything I can tell him about chicks that would help him out? Thanks and I'm really excited to have joined!

First of all, chickens can be fun to watch grow up, and they arent actually that hard to take care of. Also, you will get lots of eggs. and as long as you dont get a rooster, there wont be any crowing.

Tell dad it will teach you responsability and maybe you can figure which came first?? the chicken or the egg.....J/K

My son loves going to the coop each morning to collect his eggs....The poop is good for the garden and the eggs are delish!! We give eggs to the neighbors and it just makes us closer to our neighbors and chickens are fun for the whole family.....

Good luck;)

being that your dad is the head of the house, you shouldn't try to change his mind as much as you should honor him.

so yep, we need to find you easy to care for chickens.

ORPS. easy breezy, lemon squeezy. Hands down, the easiest to start with and they will be good layers.

access Henderson's chicken chart to utilize as a tool to show dad what they are like.

do lots of research. don't whine, beg or carry on. be a grown up and start running the routine before the chickens are even there. that way dad will see you mean business. (i'm a mom of three and a wife, so i know what i'm talking about here, not just making it up.)

now get to it!

You can feed most of your kitchen scraps to the chickens: stale bread, pizza crusts, fat off the beef roast, old rice, etc. Garbage in --> Eggs out! My chickens each require about fourteen cents worth of feed each week. And they don't even free-range. Chickens are inexpensive as far as pets go.

I totally agree with miss_jayne about how to approach this. My son always got farther by showing that he was mature and responsible in regards to any project he wanted to start.

You might also share with dad some of the coops that are out there that are nice looking and easy to clean. He may be concerned that you might have to ideas of a 'chicken shack' (which I love, but dad may not).

In my family the idea of the freshest eggs on the planet for breakfast would go a long way for both mom and dad.
