Hi everyone!
I'm new here, and starting my first flock in West Jordan, Utah (a suburb of Salt Lake City). I grew up with chickens - I had two hens when I was a kid, and LOVED them!! They were delightful, and I'm SO EXCITED to have chickens again!! My husband ordered me a coop for my birthday (Oct 10th), and it will arrive this Friday.
The chickens I had as a kid gave greenish eggs. I suspect one was an Americauna, I'm not sure what the other one was. They were quite sneaky... They each laid an egg a day, right in their coop where they were supposed to - but after a few months, they both started acting broody. I couldn't figure it out - until... I found they EACH had a nest of 10 eggs!!! They had hidden their nests in the yard (we had a coop to keep them in at night, but let them out to scratch and peck during the day - they loved the bugs in my mothers garden), and were great mommies - all of the eggs hatched! My father wouldn't mow the grass for weeks - he was worried he'd run over one of them! Well, needless to say, 22 chickens was WAY more than we were allowed to keep in the city, so my mother toted me and the 20 twelve-week old chickens to my grandfathers farm in Fairfield, UT. I was much more careful with my hens egg "hiding" behavior after that!
Anyway - sorry for the long intro... I'm looking for either chicks, or possibly hens, to start my flock with. The local IFA is done with their chick selling season. I don't really know where to go this late in the season - so any suggestions would be appreciated!
I look forward to getting to know everyone - there seems to be a wealth of great information here from both new and seasoned "bird parents" here! I'll be asking a LOT of questions, so I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge, and truly appreciate all of your input!
Best,
ChipmunkChick
