Hi everyone! I will soon be receiving 7 Black Australorps. While researching info, I have visited this site quite a bit, and so I decided to join.
In the past, I've had chickens on 70 acres in Oklahoma, but that is a much different experience than this time. We are on 1/2 an acre, in the city part of Rio Rancho, close to the Albuquerque city limit. They will be in an 8'x5' elevated hen house, with a total secured run of 10'x5', including the area under the hen house. We will be trying Compost DLM, to see how well that works in this area. We intend to add a parallel run or two, also secure, once we have absorbed the cost of building this coop. Until then, we will open the secured coop and allow the hens to roam a fenced off part of our yard that is approximately 40 feet by 60 feet when we are able to oversee their yard time....there are coyotes in our area.
Two sheds are on the east side of the fenced area, one of which has double doors on the side with the chicken coop, and on the other side of that shed is a single door entering the play area of our yard. To date, mostly weeds have grown in this lot, including many goatheads.
Over the next few weeks, I'll be reading past posts and comments about New Mexico--specifically central NM, when possible--to gather any info that I can. If anyone feels like responding with a summary of lessons learned for owning chickens in this area, I'll gladly read it!
Thank you,
Albert
