Welcome, I'm also a noob and learning.
Never tried a fake egg, but when they laid on the ground or elsewhere I moved their egg to the box and left it for about a day, that seemed to do the trick. Once they get the hang of it they'll use the nesting boxes all the time.
Also, what are you using in your nesting boxes for bedding. The nesting pads from tractor supply are pretty nice and last about a month. Think I paid about $25 for a dozen.
btw, just had my first 4 egg day, all my girls are finally laying.
