New member, new to chickens

The chickens can go up and down their ramps with encouragement, but they haven't been able to figure out how to go outside or inside the coop on their own. We have been helping them, but I hope they figure out how to do it!

Hey ! I am new to the group and we currently have a small 5 chicken coop that were using but we would like to keep the chickens over winter ! My question is who else keeps there chickens over winter and how do you keep them warm ! Remember we're up in Canada and last years winter was even colder than normal ! - 44 was the coldest day last winter ! I was thinking of building a garden shed and putting it inside my big shed with access to the outside ! Thanks for the help !

Hi @Bewick , welcome to BYC!

You may be interested in posting over in the Canadian thread and getting tips from them on keeping chicks in your cold winters. Chickens actually handle the cold better than they do the heat. Here's a link for you to get there:

Nice to have you join us!

They will figure it out. I was wondering if mine would come out on their own also and they did...some took longer then others. Now they fly out of there. My ramp was too steep so I put a block under the bottom and they started using it. Half my chicks go in the coop on their own, the other half we put in for now...until they figure it out. Good luck!
