Hi All!
I've been using BYC for reference since I started my flock last year. Figured it was finally time to Join!

We started with 6 hens, a Red Star (Red), 2 Buff Orpies (Pie & Roo), 1 Blue Orpie (Blue), Golden Laced Wyandotte (Dixie), and an EE (Bunny) and one Black Star Rooster (Sir Charles - aka Chuck). We lost our EE on Easter day this year. Really? wth.

Our 'middle children' we hatched this year. We ordered more eggs than we needed 10 eggs (Olive Egger, EE, Black Copper Marans...7 hatched, all cockerals except for 2 OEs

, figures) and we gathered 7 of our own. We assumed that since it was our first time hatching we wouldn't get a high hatch rate....Well, 13 hatched. --So right off the bat we were having chicken math issues. We luckily found homes for all but 2 roosters so far. We also found homes for a few of the pullets from our own girls. So we are down to 2 Olive Eggers (Cricket & Clover) and 2 black star mix pullets (blue orphie (Bear) & GLW (Ash), and the cockerels (Black Copper Maran (Kopi) and EE (Mocha)

--So if anyone is in our area and could use a free EE or Black Copper Maran cockerel, let me know! --This is Mocha...

Since we were attempting to get hens that lay colored eggs, I was pretty sad. So my husband (my chicken math enabler), decided it would be a good idea to order some chicks. Of course I couldn't say no!

So we now have 7 new babies! --EE (Hopper), Cream Legbar (Skye), Golden Cuckoo Maran (Suni), Salmon Faverolles (Piper, aka Dumpling), Delaware (Della), Partridge Cochin (Violet), Double-laced Barnevelder (Willow).

--We started with a small coop from CC Only. However, we have bears in the area and last year we had a -20 degree (-40 wind chill) winter, so this year we opted to build a new, sturdier coop. Quick pics of our work in progress...

Next step..integrating our middle kids with our big kids and getting them all into the new coop!

Sounds like you had quite the experience with rooster overload! Your new coop is looking good, everyone should feel comfortable in that.

It's nice to have you here, thanks for joining us!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

Yes on the roosters, I'm so hoping I can still find homes for the last two. They are both really beautiful and neither are aggressive...we just didn't know what they were until now. My hubby was still holding out that they would be pullets. LOL.

I can't wait to get everyone in one place. It's pretty tiring trying to pooper scoop 2 coops, runs and a brooder!

HI! Welcome!

That's a beautiful roo. So glad to hear Hubby is an enabler. Here at BYC we're always eager to help with that and chicken math! Looks like you're using the "one of each" math. Your new coop is super! I look forward to seeing your posts. Best of luck with your flock.

Really about the only way to avoid roosters is to buy sex links or hens at point of lay. So many roos glutting the market - I fear very, very few get good homes. Your ee roo is gorgeous.
