Hi Everyone -

I'm a new member living north of Denver area.

I've got started about 5 years ago in another state with "accidental" chickens that someone wanted to get rid of because they were moving. I've been mostly a dog and cat owner (and one horse a while ago) before that. So I converted a dog house that my pups were not using into a coop and have been learning ever since. Have now raised chicks many times too - which I really like to do. When we moved I made sure the new owners wanted chickens, and those girls have been going strong ever since.

When we moved here I specifically checked local ordinances to be sure I could have chickens again. I used to have two acres and this yard is pretty small so thought I would wait two or three years before getting all set up again. Turns out I needed chickens before I realized - the number earwigs around here are stuff of nightmares! I got some gardens in our first year but the earwigs ate everything - and I mean the entire plant and the flowers too. That did it. When the shutdown for covid happened I used my spare time to build a coop and run. Got chicks soon after and they were eating bugs before the first snow - good girls! My neighbors now want to borrow my chickens to eat bugs in their yards so I'll have to build a couple chicken tractors so I can loan them out.

I've enjoyed many breeds since then and I've enjoyed learning personalities of the different breeds. I can also speak "chicken" pretty good now too (lol!).

I have looked for info on this forum before and thought I would finally join. Looking forward to seeing and hearing from other chicken-people too.

North Denver? You do know that (Chickens can’t ski ⛷) don’t you?
Welcome to the coop! :frow
Hi and Thank You.
I use mealy worm snacks pretty much every day. My little bantams LOVE them when in our back yard, but mealy worms are BORING and said bantams won't come to them anymore if they get out of the yard. Same for cracked corn - which I don't use except for cold/winter or dire emergencies.

Welcome to BYC!!
