hey Penturner,
welcome-byc.gif
from Riverside, CA!!! That is quite the intro. I agree that eggs need a lot of air and benefit from a cooldown and air exchange by hand turning them. There are little holes in the styrofoam incubators, but they just don't look big enough to give air to a bunch of actively getting ready to hatch chicks, to my guestimation... You will LOVE the complexity of chickens... Glad you joined.

Thank you all for the warm welcome. This group looks a lot like my #1 internet group which is about penturning. very friendly family like atmosphere on that group. and I mean family in both a good and bad way

I look forward to getting to know some of you and get familiar with your flocks. Since I live in town any space I have for birds would be limited and regulated. Also noise could be an issue.

Ringneck Pheasants where mentioned as an alternative. Although they are used for tying flies they are not the premium that Grey Jungle Cock hackle (Neck) feathers are. The neck feathers of the Grey Jungle fowl are valuable enough to search for as they are naturally dropped. Pretty much as valuable of many of your fertile eggs would be. Keeping one or two males would not only give me some very pretty birds to keep but would fairly easily support themselves with the sale of there feathers and not require killing the bird to get them.
I don't think the feathers from a small flock of say a dozen males could supply the demand of even one local fly shop.

I also have an unusual market for jungle cock eyes, and that is in there use in making feather pens. many of my penturning freinds have started using them to make pens with and have run head long into the rarity issue. having a bird or two would very likely not go much further than simply supplying penturners with the feathers they want for making pens with them. The feathers are not used to make quill type pens. they are actually placed on a brass tube, cast in acrylic and then turned an polished into the shape of the pen. pretty much the same way feathers are used on fishing rods as a design. it results in a very pretty effect for the body of the pen and can be done so that you see the entire feather laying inside the pen body.
I hope this works since I still have not tried the whole posting a photo thing, but this is the link to a pen made with feathers.

When you talk about the Jungle Fowl eyes, do you mean the actual eye ball?? Or, am i missing something here?

LoL, Nope but it is a thought. The reason they got known as eyes is that is what they are supposed to look like on the artificial lure.
