Hello everyone!
I have been lurking here for the past few months and finally decided to jump in the pool. Great information and stories can be found here!
I'm new to chickens and belonging to a forum. I have 2 (stealth) Delaware hens I purchased at 10 weeks old from an animal foundation that promotes keeping backyard chickens. They are now about 24 weeks old and one of the girls (Speckle) has finally started to lay.
Her sister (Spot) is showing signs, so anyday now! (My kids named them.) I have a concern regarding the 'egg song' that I'll post in the appropriate section later.
My first coop was a stationary tractor that after a couple of months ended up being entirely too small. I underestimated how large my 2 hens would end up. Now I have a nice 2' by 4' coop with 4' by 10' run. I live in Sacramento, CA , so my weather is pretty mild in the winter and my concern is more for the summer heat, so it is well ventilated with lots of screening that can be uncovered when it starts to heat up. Right now they love being out in the rain and scratching around in the mulch.
