Hello everyone, I am new member, however I have raised chickens in my backyard several times before and I am always open to new idea's on how to do things better, because if there is one thing I have found out, it is that, if there is a way a Raccoon, Opossum, Fox, or Coyote to get access to your chickens they will find it, even in the middle of a city. I am currently buying the necessary items to build out a secure coop and chicken run for my 6 female chicks (Black Australorp) arriving in July. I look forward to sharing and learning from all of you the knowledge that make raising chickens in the city both a challenge and a pleasure.

Yes, unfortunately most things like chicken and living in the city doesn't mean those critters aren't there to find them!

I think you will be very happy with your Australorps. They are a favorite around this site and I love mine.

Keep us posted when the chicks arrive and don't hesitate to share any questions or stories around here.

Thanks for joining and welcome to BackYard Chickens!

Hiya, and welcome to BYC! :frow We're glad we're here.

Definitely, 1/2" hardware cloth will keep most everything out. Be sure that's secured in place with washers. We bent ours out about 18" on the bottom, then covered it with rocks. @DobieLover will be along and can show how she didn't cover hers. We border a forest so have to keep everything secure at night for sure!
