Oh, and I'm in Northern California. When I was raising hens before we had a ton of different breeds, but I noticed that our buffs and golds always did the best during our chilly winters (not super cold, lows can get to 20F), and that they still lay a decent amount even when it's cold. They also didn't pick on one another anywhere near as much as the Reds, americaunas, astralorps, welsummers, marans, or wyandottes. Plus, all of those chickens never seemed to get as big and hefty, so they suffered in the winter.
