I have 8 two week old Goldens and I just got 5 one day old buffs Thursday morning!!

A little background on my "backyard" raising experience.... When I was living with my parents my sister and I raised a flock of laying hens through middle school and highschool. We also did 24-36 meat birds every twelve weeks. On my own I also had a flock of pigeons (for both racing and meat). When we moved out together we gave the flock of laying hens to my boyfriend's mother, and she still gets eggs even though all the birds are 8 years old!! Over the course of the last few years she's lost a few hens to age, foxes, and the resident bear, so 4 of my golds and 1 buff that I'm brooding right now are for her. They're gonna be nice and happy with the other 7 remaining hens, she has a HUGE coop!!
The quail that I'm planning on incubating are going to be Jumbo Coturnix, but I'm waiting to buy eggs until I have everything that I need for a successful incubation, and until I can move my chicks out to my loft (custom built pigeon loft that we moved from my parents place that I'm converting into a small, but tall, chicken coop. I will also have a fenced in area for them to run around in.)

Oh, and I'm in Northern California. When I was raising hens before we had a ton of different breeds, but I noticed that our buffs and golds always did the best during our chilly winters (not super cold, lows can get to 20F), and that they still lay a decent amount even when it's cold. They also didn't pick on one another anywhere near as much as the Reds, americaunas, astralorps, welsummers, marans, or wyandottes. Plus, all of those chickens never seemed to get as big and hefty, so they suffered in the winter.
