(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I grew up with chickens. Many of my childhood memories revolve around our chickens and raising chicks from our own flock. Now, I finally have a home of my own and a few weeks ago we decided we were ready to buy some chicks from our local feed store.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
We currently have 4 chicks that are about three weeks old.
(3) What breeds do you have?
They are supposedly speckled sussex, however I have my doubts! They have the color pattern of a specked sussex but they are very light colored (maybe buff sussex?).
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I love watching them and interacting with them. They can be so entertaining. I love that they each have their own little personalities!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I love being outdoors--hiking, camping, and biking. I also really enjoy cooking and baking!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My boyfriend and I recently moved to a small town for work. We are both geologists working in environmental monitoring / remediation. Other than our 4 little chicks, we also have a dog and a cat.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC while searching online for help raising chicks in hot, dry climates! I am looking for suggestions on acclimating our new little flock to the summer heat in the NM desert!

I hope you can find answers to the hot dry climate thing.. I don't have that problem- so I don't have that answer. We have had more rain this spring than the ark got. I am thinking of loading my chickens up two by two.
