Hi, Everyone! I’m a relatively new chicken owner, going into my third year of “live and learn” with my flock, and finally decided to register on the forum, since this was one of the websites I frequently visited to prepare myself. I read a lot of great tips and advice for raising a happy and healthy flock, so Thank You All!

I started off with 10 chickens – nine sweet hens (Golden Comets, Brahmas, Easter Egger and bantam Silkie), and one deceptively cute but actually rather obnoxious bantam Silkie rooster - all raised as chicks. They’re primarily my pets, with the eggs being a bonus. I free range them on my property, and I’m lucky enough to have nice neighbors who don’t mind when the squad ventures onto their property as well in search of greener (and “buggier”) pastures. 🙂

Unfortunately, I lost a few over the past couple of years, three to predators and one that was egg bound, and so now I’m down to 5 hens ……and the still-obnoxious mini rooster, Coq Au Vin, that even the predators in my area apparently don’t want to tangle with.

I know I’ve got to get some more hens for the rooster, since he has a favorite girl that he always goes after to the exclusion of the other hens, and she’s starting to look a little bedraggled from his “attentions”. So I’ve recently ordered 6 more hens from a hatchery, and I’m really nervous about trying to integrate them once they’re ready to join the others in the coop. But, I’m sure I’ll get great advice here on the forum, and I look forward to posting some advice-seeking and getting feedback from you all in the near future 😎. Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If he's got a favorite hen, adding more hens may or may not help her out. He's still going to go after her first.
If you've ordered from a hatchery I'm assuming that you actually ordered chicks and not hens. If that's the case you can fashion a brooder right in your coop and use a brooder plate to raise them within sight of the flock. Integration can then begin when they are about 4 weeks old. It works out quite well.

Welcome to BYC. I agree with @DobieLover
More females will not make it easier on the "favorite " girl. If he is stressing her out, you may need to remove him from the flock. Sometimes roosters breed a female as a way of bullying, not because they favor them. If this is the case, he will not be deterred by more hens.
Good luck with your flock!
