(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?

  • I am new to chickens, but have been an observer for at least a year before I decided I was ready. I first got my chickens about a year ago and ordered them online from Hoover hatchery.

    (2) How many chickens do you have right now?
  • Right now, I have 34 chickens with more on the way….. I ordered an additional 35

    (3) What breeds do you have? I have all Isa Browns, hatching 6 ayam Cemani, and also hatching 5 black orpingtons in the incubator as I am typing this. LOL

    (4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
  • My favorite aspect of having chickens is the fertilizer that they produce for my garden and other plants. I also enjoy the eggs and just the general disposition and curiosity of my birds. They are also good therapy for my stressor and encourage me to get out more in nature. They are free range so I enjoy gathering them up at the end of the day. I have them trained to come when I ring a cow bell.

    (5) What are some of your other hobbies?
  • My other hobbies are gardening, interior design, and hiking

    (6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
  • I am married with 3 children, and I live on the east coast. I am a licensed realtor and tax professional. I also have an established customer base for my eggs and sell them.

    (7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
  • I found this community because I had several issues with the incubation process. I failed at my first incubation attempt and only had 2 chicks hatch out of 24. I gathered from the community post that it was due to inconsistent temperatures. I took the eggs out after 25 days of incubation.

Welcome to BYC!!

Welcome to the coop! I use the Forums and Articles tabs at the top of the page to do research. You can get lost for hours. It's nice to know you are minutes away from getting help with questions and emergencies! I always check in the "What's New" section as well at the top of this page. This way I can read how I may have a similar question or help give some advice.
