Ok girl, we need to talk about central TexasHi! I'm Tammy. I am from south Texas and was raised on a small family farm. Just recently I have moved back out to the country and am starting my own little homestead in central Texas.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I am new to chickens. We tried to have some growing up, but no matter what we did, the coyotes kept getting them. So we stuck to larger livestock like pigs and cows. My new chicks just arrived today!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
Just got 20 babies.
(3) What breeds do you have?
10 Black Astralorps and 10 Buff Orpingtons
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
I like the idea of raising my own food, knowing what I'm eating- ate and knowing they are treated well and with love
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
I like to garden, we also have a rabbit colony going and, totally in the opposite direction- I'm a computer nerd
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I have a daughter (12), 4 dogs, 4 cats, 2 snakes, 2 lizards, 2 ferrets and TAMUK rabbits in a colony. I work from home and am in IT- have been in IT since 1995. I have undergrad degrees in the computer field, a master of management and most recently a master of science in nutrition and human performance. That last degree has nothing to do with my career- I have several autoimmune diseases- and if you have any, you know there is no 'cure', only drugs to help with symptoms. One of my conditions is liver autoimmune disease and it will eventually cause my liver to fail completely. I am too hard headed to just take a pill and wait for this to happen. So I have been getting myself educated on how nutrition will help with these health concerns. I am convinced that I will find the answer- haven't yet, but like I said- I'm hard headed
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have known about this site for quite a while. I just hadn't gotten a membership until I finally got the chicks- which has been years in the making. Looking forward to this adventure with all the BYC members and support!!
