Greetings! I have 9 chickens, 8 of which are Black Copper Marans, one hen does not appear to be a black copper maran, but the question is about her. These chickens came from the same breeder and were hatched in April, half of the hens have recently started to lay.

Now the one hen in question has always been 3 times as large as all the others in the flock, including the rooster. She has no health problems except for making a strange strangled sounding noice, followed by a wet gurgle ... she does not do this all the time. She is eating fine, no crusting/runny eyes ... nothing but this weird noise. It almost sounds like someone is strangling her ... any thoughts on to what this could be?

All other chickens in the flock are fine at this point. They are in the hen house at night and in a large chicken yard during the entire day ... plenty of fresh water and food daily. They were on medicated chick starter until about a month ago.

Thanks for any input.

She's probably a jersey giant. As for the weird noises? I dunno

Hi! Welcome!

The BCM's are so pretty! For your big gal that you are concerned about, can you start a thread, copy paste your Question here also? This lets the folks with lots of medical knowledge know you need help.

If you would like to find out her breed, you could start a thread, post a pic in https://www.backyardchickens.com/newsearch?search=what+breed+or+gender+is+this
The breed eggsperts check in there. Best of luck to you!

Just wanted to say, "Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!" Not sure to make of the noise your hen is making so I hope you find more information on the emergencies thread.

That kind of noise is how some folks describe a rooster learning to crow. Is that a possibility here? Welcome to Backyard chickens.

A picture would be helpful. Either the breed is wrong or it's a rooster is my guess.
