I have kept backyard chickens for a couple of years in Utah. Recently we have had a mild mouse infestation. Hanta virus comes to mind. Apart from masked what can I do to about the mice? Feed is inside the coop. Cats are out of the question. My bulldog would protest and we are allergic. Any other suggestions? I think the mice are taking some of my once prolific laying hens' eggs.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
I set 2 snap traps baited with peanut butter and a piece of bread smashed down into the trigger and place them inside a wire dog crate in the run at night. I made sure that the chickens couldn't get at the triggers before I set them. Empty the traps in the morning and rebait.

Sorry to hear about your problem with mice. My chickens must be more blood-thirsty than yours; I tend to find dead mice, half-eaten mice and/or mice being eaten by my birds.

Is the feed you're keeping in the coops being stored in metal containers, like garbage cans? That's how I keep vermin out of feed here.

I have not trapped mice, but a few years ago, I had a problem with rats. After many failed attempts to control the invasion, I invested in an electronic trap. The birds couldn't get into it, and I didn't have to touch the dead rats when it was time to empty the trap.

Best wishes in getting rid of your pests, and welcome to BYC. I hope you find a solution here!
