Hi my name is Kim. I have 7 hens that are about one year old. My question is about roosters. I ordered a few more chicks for May. One should be a rooster. Plymouth Rock. My question is, in general how much do the roosters "bother" the hens and are they really rough on them? We are all happy the way things are. I thought it would be a good idea to get a rooster to protect the flock and experiment in raising my own. I'm not sure if I really want a rooster. Thanks.

Barred rocks are usually good to the hens. Sounds like you will have a pretty good ratio of hens to roosters as well. Your roo will be reaching breeding age at about 6 months (sometimes longer) so you should be in pretty good shape

Just like hens, roosters can have very different "ways" with hens. I wish I could have a rooster, but I am too close to neighbors. I like the way they are protective. Flocks need a leader. Good luck with your "man".
