I am a new member (first post) and got two ducks. This is a great forum and I have been reading for the last a few days now.

My co-worker picked up these two ducks on the road and she did not have space to house them so I adopted them.

I know one of them is a Pekin duck but what is the other one? Also how old are they? 3 - 4 weeks?

I had to quickly buy a dog kennel to house them (for during the day) and a stock tank as their swimming pool. We have two fish ponds (one koi and one goldfish) in the back yard and I will let them swim in the koi pond (20 feet by 40 feet) when they mature.

Here are some pictures.

Thanks.

I have had them for only 4 days now. They spent their first two nights in the garage in a big plastic tote on wood shavings. I set up the kennel on the 3rd day but around 7:30 PM or so they called me to come into the garage. They did that again tonight so they are back in the garage. That is very cute.

Wow...you have spoilt those two already. They do have a nice set up there- and it looks like they will be very happy to love there with you. They are so very cute as well. So gald to hear your co-worker was kind enough to stop and pick them up- and just as kind for you to adopt them.

to the flock!!

I like your little set-up you have for your maturing little duckies. I think that your dark duck may be a Cayuga duck. Here look at this sitehttp://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/Ducks/Cayuga/BRKCayuga.html But that is just a deduction. When s/he matures then it can be deciphered then. But I am pretty sure s/he is because the size is pretty big. Congrats on your new endevour. Hope you keep us all updated on your duckies..

It was nice of you to take them in. I'm sure you will enjoy them, and it looks like they are in good hands. I like that little pool.... wish that I could find something around here like that.

I see you are in Alaska. Here these stock tanks are sold in Tractor Supply Company or Menards (a building supply chain store) where I got mine on sale for $46 (this is the 50 gallon version). I have two 300 gallon and a 100 gallon versions used as filters for my fish ponds. The nice thing about them is that the bulkhead (1-1/4") is built-in so it is very easy to add PVC plumbing.

On this one for the ducks, I just used a ball valve and a 90 degree elbow so I can drain the tank outside their kennel.

I think the Cayuga deduction is a good one because I start to see some green sheen on the wings now. That Cayuga is a beautiful duck.

Thanks everyone.

Last night I found a few threads about ducks eating Japanese beetles. LOL, I sure hope mine will and they can have some great feasts and my gardens/trees/grapes will be happy as well.

I am working on a house for them and here is a pic. I will build a 5' by 4.5' base (deck) and then use railing around it.
They can then walk around the house with 1' of space around.

Today they have been playing in the stock tank.

well hello!

I started with just two ducks.... and mine live in my house... lol... Now I have six.... You have an excellent set up! It's very nice. I think the play house idea is adorable. You'll have to post pictures as you finish!

I think their red and white house will definitely suit them. Until they grow to have babies of their own. Loubapache, are you planning to cover the top of the kennel with the fly-net or leave it open? I was just wondering because I wouldn't want flying predators to dive down on your duckies.
