Hi from Fairfield, Iowa! I'm a new member, but have greatly benefited from all the great info on BYC over the past 3 years. We have a variety of breeds in our flock of 10 chickens: Barred Rock, Black Australorp, Buff Orpington, Polish, Red Star, Blue Laced Wyandotte, White Rock, and Easter Egger. We also have 3- 6 week old ducks that are Golden 300 hybrids from Metzer Farms.

I've been hearing so many good things about Black Australorps that I really want to try one. I also have a Blue Laced Red Wyandotte (Scarlet), a Buff Orpington (Wynona), Red Stars (my favorite is Maroon), two Barred Rocks (Dominator the rooster and Liberty his hen), and an EE (Eagle).

I want to get ducks some day soon also, they sound like so much fun!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. You have a nice mix of breeds. Black Australorps are my favorite standard breed as they are extremely hardy, calm and gentle (my children and granddaughter made lap pets of them), and excellent layers of brown eggs. Red Star is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from your Red Star. :eek:) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your flock.
 
Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!! Yes, I love the Black Australorps and the Red Stars - both great personalities. And the foraging talents of the Barred Rocks is most impressive. I got the Golden 300 hybrid ducks from Metzer Farms because of their reported docile personalities, medium size, and incredible egg laying abilities.
I do have a question...will start a new thread. Thanks again!
