I've been stalking the information and forums on BYC since January. Finally decided to become an official member today.

Recieved my first flock mid-May, and just about finished with building the coop (roofing and trim is all that is left). My birds have been in the coop since mid-June, and are loving their free-ranging freedom! We have 10 acres of property not too far from Ann Arbor, Michigan. What else is there to do with a parcel of land?

My husband was not so keen on the idea of raising chickens, and has discouraged me throughout the years. My youngest son is now 3, and since he is our last child, I now have time for other adventures. So, I went ahead and placed an order for 17 chickens.

I wil be posting a "What is this breed" thread soon, as I am stumped as to which chickens I actually received. Since I am a first time chicken owner, I decided to go with a variety pack. I ordered the "All Pullet Rainbow Variety Pack" from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio. I also ordered 2 roosters for herding and protection. So far, all chickens are happy and healthy, and it looks like all my pullets are actually pullets! I can't wait to get eggs!

My kids are loving the entertainment that the chickens provide, and it's amazing how receptive they are to help with the chicken chores. Keeps them outside and away from the television!

I'm looking forward to learning new things and being part of the BYC community!

Welcome to Backyard chickens, nice to meet you. You can post photos at "what breed or gender is this." Or we'll be glad to take a crack at them right here.

Welcome to BYC. Has your husband fallen for them yet?

Working on getting the chicken photos uploaded to post. It's taking longer than it should! For some reason, I can't get certain ones off my phone to the computer. Ugh!

No, the husband is still not convinced that chickens are a good idea. He did decide to help with building the coop about the time that I was putting the shingles on. I wish he would have offered when I was framing the thing!

I keep telling him no eggs for him! We'll see if he changes his mind by then...he still has a few weeks. The chicken poop in the yard isn't helping matters!
