So I live in Mississippi and am told a dozen eggs is going up to 10$. I have decide to start raising chickens. Layers not showbirds. My question is what is the best layers. Especially in hot humid climates.

Hi pyrodavis!

I'm a new member too but my family has always raised chickens. We live in Florida and our best layers have always been the Rhode Island Reds. They're pretty hardy when it comes to the heat and humidity. I'm sure there's other layers that do well in the heat and humidity, but these seem to be our favorite.

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Wow, those prices are worse than Hawaii and I thought we paid a lot here.( White Leghorns and Sex Links are the best layers in the chicken world, consistently churning out more than 300 large eggs per hen per year. These are the hens used by commercial laying houses (White Leghorns for white eggs and Sex Links for brown eggs) as they are egg laying machines. In 1979, a White Leghorn set the laying record with 371 eggs in 364 days (http://cafnr.missouri.edu/about/chicken.php). In addition, both White Leghorns and Sex Links will handle your hot humid Mississippi climate very well. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in getting lots of eggs.

Wow, those are some crazy high prices! The heat and humidity is hard on the chickens but we've had good luck with the red sex link girls laying almost every day. They are also smart and funny girls, we really like them.

If you have questions, feel free to ask. There is a lot of information available here.

Thanks for joining us!

Dozen large eggs (white) are going for just under $ 3. right now. I doubt anyone out here would spend $ 10. a dozen unless it was a life or death situation.
