hello everyone I'm new to backyard chickens and just love chickens,weve just built our coopand putting the finishing touches on it to make sure its safe and ready so that we can finally get our chickens, were looking for a rhode island red and hen,a pair,there my fav,all chicks are lol, we live out in the country and want too have eggs of our own ,this has been a dream of ours for like ten years,and finally got it done,were excited to be among the chicken peeps,

Nice to meet you Cindy, Welcome to Backyard chickens. I feel I would be remiss if I didn't mention that a rooster can handle 10 hens. Less than that and the hens get overbred and physically damaged. If you have only one hen and the rooster - that is going to be a very bad situation for her. Hens will lay just as many eggs without a rooster, and are less stressed . Rooster is needed IF you need to sell 'fertile" eggs or want to hatch them.

Chickens are flock animals and your hen would be happier with another couple of hens.
