Drumstick diva~ no it was a hawk that attacked her. My husband came out and found the hawk on a tree with the dogs barking at it in a near-by tree. The other hawk was not too far away. There was one large puncture site to Holly's head that he saw. He said he did not examine her well as he does not do well with that stuff. Hubby found her stuck in the hole that her sister escaped through. Idk if she died from the injury, stress, suffocation, or combo. We did not witness the other chickens death in Nov. we assumed our greedy dog was upset with her over a piece of bread, they fought and her neck fractured

She was such a well tamed girl too. I'm so happy to have found this forum that truly loves chickens and respects them

Thank you all for your support. Today was a little better with the grieving

Welcome to BYC! Sorry that you've had troubles free ranging. :( I have lost birds to neighbor dogs and I understand how frustrating/sad it can be. You are doing the right thing to research and try to protect your girls. :) Keep it up

I am so sorry to hear of your loss

but also so very pleased that Siera was safe, you have me reaching for the tissues!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends

Thank you Teila. Are all those chickens in your picture yours? My husband spends hours photographing our chickens and the other critters we have. My avatar is a photo he took of Holly. Having our feather, fury, and fuzzy critters have been awesome for our children. It has taught them responsibility and to love. I hope it brings them many positive childhood memories

Thank you Micah. I would like to continue their free range life style safely. I'm finding tons of info here too. It's funny to see 8 chickens, three dogs and one of our cats playing together in the backyard. Would love to know what they are saying to each other lol have a great day

Hey faraleeheaven

Yep, those are four of the six chickens we had when the picture was taken. Sadly we lost KiKi [second from the left] so we now only have five. I also spend hours photographing my girls but out of those many hours I might get one decent image. The rest are blurred or have half a moving chicken etc

My son is 30 and lives at home but after saving enough to buy his own place will be moving soon. He reckons that noisy chickens and cat hair everywhere [exaggeration] is the reason he will never have pets .. We shall see, I quite often catch him cuddling one of the cats or chatting to them

Teila~ Sorry about Kiki. She is beautiful! I have to laugh about your son. My 18 y/o feels the same way about our crew. States he will never have a pet! He too has been caught holding a dog or cat

I keep telling him when a kid moves out they take a critter with them lol
