We live in Canada, near Windsor, Ontario. We immigrated 18 years ago and are both retired. My daughter and her husband shares the lower level .My wife is the real gardener and started a vegetable garden just after we moved in. Since then she talked about having chickens with the idea of having a few hens to supply us with eggs.
We bought our chickens from somebody in our area who assured us that most of them would be hens.
As my wife was not sure exactly where she wanted to put the coop, I was cought "off guard" as she already ordered the chickens before I started to build the coop, with the result that I could not put my ideas on paper first before we started. I had a tigght schedule to complete the coop before the chicks arrived.
In the end it has worked ou "OK" and we had our first egg a fortnight ago from "bertie" which has obviously now our pride and joy.
We were so thrilled having them and they grew so fast. Unfortunately we found out too late that we had roosters among them and one of them became the "Champ" . He crowed from approximately 4:30 a.m. and often during the day, greeting another rooster in a neigbour's backyard aproximately 300 yards away on a small farm that borders our town. Our nextdoor neighbour started complaining and we had no other option at the time but to kill the rooster. We were not very happy about this as he was a beautiful animal.
