Not looking to breed, more for the morning wake up and maybe a little protection from predators is what I was thinking. A rooster probably would not fare much better with a coon or possum though huh?Rhode Island reds are very good layers but, tend to be aggressive with other breeds.
White leghorns are great layers but, a flighty breed. Lots of folks are forgoing having a rooster - many turn out to be too aggressive with people and hens. Unless you need a rooster for fertile eggs to sell or hatch, hens will continue to lay the same about of eggs without one - albeit infertile eggs.
