Welcome to BYC. You are correct. The advertised capacity for most commercially available coops is over stated.

Well, I guess my first bit of advice should have been: Breath! It will be OK! If you ask 10 of us a question, you'll likely get 12 different answers. There are lots of different husbandry styles and approaches and most of them are very good. In the end it just comes down to what works best for you and your birds, when you find that, you will have found your style.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you've joined us! You're right about most commercial coops looking way too small. Most people here suggest st least 4 sq ft of floor space per chicken in the coop and 10 sq ft per chicken in the run. Each nest box can service 3-5 ladies. Hope this info helps!
