Hi everyone, My name is Paula and this is the first time I hatched eggs in a incubator. My hen named Mable hatched 12 eggs out of 15 that she laid. Then she proceeded to hide 22 eggs in the barn. So i decided to buy a incubator and see if any would hatch. So by the time i got the incubator the eggs were old. I left them where she hid them and did not touch them until i was ready for them. Well at 21 days one hatched, Oliver was born. Strong and healthy. Then the next day 3 pipped, and then nothing. I know i should have left things alone, but i hear this peeping and i know they would have died. So i picked the shell and peeled the membrane using warm water and coconut oil and hatched 2 more babies. I was such a nervous wreck hatching these eggs. But a mom has to do what a mom does. The third baby died before i started the process. Now Mable the mom also hid 8 more eggs just before the incubator arrived so i put them in 3 days later. Only one hatched, but it is strong and healthy. Unfortunately my 2 Rooster have since died by some animal, we live in a wooded area and i have seen hawks and owls. Hopefully one of my chickens that Mable hatched is a rooster so i can have more fertile eggs. Winter is coming and i could use the break. I have 4 babies to bring up now.

Welcome to BYC! So glad you could join!

Yeah, most of my hens are on their 3rd clutch now. Thankfully, only my silly silkie Princess tends to go through the winter raising clutches.
I'm sorry about your roosters, hopefully one of their chicks is a son to continue their legacy.
I lost 2 roosters, 3 hens and 5 babies in one week. But i still have 8 free range babies and Mable left. We moved them back to the barn. But the babies still roost at night in the trees. I would have to catch them and lock them up in the barn for a few days so they can get comfortable with there new surroundings. It is still warm so i am going to wait awhile.

:welcome

Hi Paula, sorry for the losses and congrats on the assisted hatch. Do you know what's getting your birds? I've always heard if they roost in trees overnight they are at more risk for being taken by predators.

Best of luck to you!
We are not sure who got them, some just disappeared and i found the bodies of 2. There heads were gone and they were ripped open. And after a few days they were no where to be found. The worst of it all is our horse opened up a gate and let 2 dogs out and they killed 3 of my 5 goats. Sofia, Lola, and Jill the baby. The girls were pregnant two. I am so sick about it. Cried all night. So i am invested in keeping the little ones safe, the ones i hatched.
