I started with my pet chickens 5 years ago after rescuing a little black 5 day old chick from being trampled by a horse after his mother was killed by the same horse. The little one turned out to be a rooster and even though we live in a residential house my neighbours were very nice about it and never complained about his crowing. I adopted some ex battery hens to keep him company. They have all since passed away but I cannot image my live without my chickens. I current have three hens. The one is a hybrid I rescued two years ago and she is about 6 or 7 years now. The other two, a potch koekoek and a black australorp, are both 9 months old.
I love watching them digging in the garden and their excitement when you have treats for them.
I have two dogs as well that live in peace with the hens.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Rescuing chickens is how a lot of people end up falling in love with having chickens. Your story is the first that I heard where someone rescued a chick from being trampled to death by a horse though. You'll see several ex-batt rescuers here too. Thank you for rescuing them.
