In the Brooder
Lived on a farm many years ago. We had chickens, goats, and cows around but can't say I remember much about them or that anyone of us were educated on anything about chickens except mucking out the block hen house and collecting eggs. I enjoyed watching the chickens; learned they aren't stupid as many think and they have different personalities. Retired now and have my urban backyard divided w' 4' high wire fence (6' outer fence) to keep my dogs out of my small garden. Thinking if I made the 4' inner fence taller, I could get 3-4 hens to peck around the garden.I have a 5X10' sturdy dog pen with a heavy water proof top built over it, at one end of the garden. I could put a small coop in side to help protect them from what ever wild life is out and about at night. Both health and finance issues prevent my traveling so I'm looking for more ways to enjoy life at home in an urban environment - which is not my first choice but only option at this point. Wonder if the dog pen would be a suitable winter run, wrapped 3 sides of the pin with heavy plastic tarp in winter and break up a couple of bales of straw to cover concrete?
