Greetings!

We are looking into getting chickens and want to do it right. We are dancers and vegans, and want to feed our dogs the eggs instead of participating in the meat industry. We were referred by someone else to join this site. :)

I'll be wanting to know:
1. What type of chickens lay the most eggs, are the most friendly, and are comfortable in Southern California weather.
2. How can I make a safe and comfortable home for them.
3. What would a automatic water and feeder look like?
4. How do I find out if it's legal to own chickens in my area?

Looking forward to this new journey!

Hello, Jaami, and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
You can visit the articles section here and search for coop ideas.
Lots of chicken breeds would do well in CA.
Leghorns lay lots of eggs.
Visit your local Town Clerk and ask them to direct you to who can let you know what the ordinances on owning chickens in your area are.
Good luck!

Any chicken would be fine in SoCal but, depending where you are you may find it difficult to find chickens just now due to an outbreak of virulent Newcastle Disease.

There are lots of forums here to help get you started. Good luck!
