I recently purchased and assembled a coop big enough for 8 chickens but decided on getting three only. I live in a rural area and my property backs up to the woods. I have a trail camera set up and have seen the animals entering my yard so decided to put the coop close to the house. What's the best way to protect them from preditors at night? Should I shut them up in the roosting area at night?
 
Welcome to Backyard Chickens. It would be best to shut them up in the roosting area of their coop. Do you let them free range during the day? If you are experiencing losses from that - you may decide to have them in an enclosed run with top (to prevent raptor attack), and maybe a few strands of electrified fencing to teach predators to keep away from your birds.

Built an enclosed run into the coop and plan on getting netting for the top. They will only be allowed in there when I am home. I also have 2 dog's that will be in the yard but unable to get to the coop without being zapped by the invisible fence.
 
Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Install a predator apron around the coop and run, replace all the latches with something a toddler couldn't open and consider running some hot wires around your setup.
Whatever the packaging read, it will never hold the number of birds stated. They never do.
