Myvsisters intruduced me to chickens. One sister gave me 2 roosters when they were moving out of state. They were best friends for several years. Then then other sister gave me some hens. We were hooked. They were so much fun to watch. And then dogs happened. New dog got in the pin and killed them all. Now we are trying again, starting with babies. Using some really nice rabbit hutches my daughter built. They are temporary. We need to build a rather large coop
We have fenced in a yard with electric fence around it. The dog has learned about the fence and stays away. We have put out snake repellant and it seems to be working. Except we trapped one that was under the house. But finally got it out.
We have a few of several varieties. We got started by rescuing some Cornish cross chicks from an overturned truck. We were told they were meat chickens. That's all. We brought home 15. We didn't kill them when we found out that they were intended to becslaughtedvatv20 to 14 weeks. They are huge now. Some weight over13 pounds. We have 4 silliest, amarecanas, buff orphingtons, Sussex, easter eggers and a few bantam

Welcome to BYC Becky Jean. The problem with Cornish X, is they are programmed to eat themselves too death. If they are NOT processed early enough, their legs will collapse from trying to hold up so much weight and their organs will give out.

The way to delay their demise is to force them to exercise ie, put feeders far away so they have to walk to them. Have them free range with regular chickens, so again they have work to find something to eat.

Some Cornish x are processed as early at 8-10 weeks of age, I believe for the grocery store markets.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!
@drumstick diva has given you some good advice. You can extend meat birds lives quite a bit by feeding them every other day, they are designed to pack on the pounds on the smallest amount of food. Feeding them daily like regular chickens will kill them. Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!
