Folks either love or hate DE depending on who you ask. I have NEVER FOUND IT TO BE WORTH THE PRICE. IT DOES NOTHING!! I tried it many years ago when "Gardens Alive," hyped it as being THE product to use to eliminate bugs and probably everything else. Just eliminated the money I spent on it.:hit

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Definitely sleeping in the coop is much safer for them however they may be trying to avoid the heat. However watch for bullying, it's not uncommon for birds to start guard at night and deny access to others to come in to roost. You might at some point physically get them inside.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

DE has worked very well for us. Years ago we had a mite problem and once we used DE they never returned. Recently I noticed ants coming up trying to get out of the wet, we had had a long period of rain. I sprinkled a little DE around the nesting boxes in inside the coop and the ants were gone within an hour

Now this makes sense! Before they all started roosting outside of the coop I noticed just one of the new younger birds was sleeping out side of the coop in the run on the ground. Two nights in a row I went out and hand placed her back in the coop. It is very possible the older birds were bullying her and that’s what caused them to all come out. I’m going to remove the roost In their run today and If by 7pm they are not in the coop I will place them in their coop by hand. Thank you for your response. This one made the most sense of all. And definitely triggered me to think of what has caused them to move outside.
