Thanks everybody for the kind welcome! Being here makes raising baby chicks for the first time ever, much less worrisome.
They will be going out to the coop some time next week. What is the general opinion on diatomaceous earth? For now their floor is grass, which I am guessing will last about a week. Then we will probably switch to sand or just the dirt. Thoughts?

Don't bother. It doesn't live up even a little to the hype surrounding it.

I prefer wood chips. They slowly compost with the poop, they drain very well, the birds love to scratch around in it to turn up morsels, as they break down they make a very nice medium for the birds to dust bathe in and around here I can get them for free!

Just like so many other topics, you'll find different opinions on DE. I believe it's not helpful and can even cause respiratory issues so I don't use it.
