We’ve had the heat wave here too! We’ve had a reprieve the past couple days, but looks like we are in for another heatwave next week. I know what you mean about the “mothering instinct”. I fall deeply in love with them the minute I bring them home....even Ed, lol.Love his name. I too have a huge emotional attachemtn to my flock. I have 13, almost 8 week old Australorps, black. I am in the process of teaching them the coop is the safe place and their home. Weather got cooler, it was over 95 for days, wasn't too keen on trapping them in there in such heat. But we are in a cooler run now for a few days. So far they are happy. I have not raised chickens since I was a kid, this is awesome. I find it is a great way for me to use my unused maternal energy!
It does take a lot of energy, but it gives me a reason to get up in the morning
