My 12 year old daughter is the chicken expert in our household. We have 40 chickens of multiple breeds. Our best eggs are from Rhode Island Reds. We also have Australorp, Leghorn, Plymouth Rock, White Lace, & Silkies. And yes, I've been attacked by a rooster before...they are jerks!

Youngsters are usually the ones with extreme interest. They like to figure things out. I have known chickens from a young age too!

And yes, roosters can be jerks. But I've had some sweet ones who sleep in my lap

By the way, your coop looks beautifully made. Do you free range your chickens?
