Hello everyone
I have two hens out of a starting flock six. One died early on, the other were three were roosters and were re homes. One has started laying this week and I’m wanting to add another hen soon. I’m looking for a breed that will do well in southwest NM. I am a new chicken momma since March 2023.

I do some gardening, sewing, canning, recently
started swimming with the grandkids, and enjoy hanging out with my hen girls.

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow

Here, down in the South Central Mountains of New Mexico! Most breeds can tolerate our heat, I've had good luck with Black Australorps, Buff Orpingtons, Barred Rocks... Give them plenty of shade, run big fans to move air and allow them to sit in front if them. Dampening down the floor of the coop and run will help greatly to cool things off as its like one big evaporative cooler. You can put out low tubs of water to stand in, cool feet are cool birds. Ice in the waterers as well. Cool watermelon too.

Good luck and stay cool out there!! :)

Welcome!
Pretty much any breed could work if raise from a chick.

Beware that chicken diseases are real and real nasty and very contagious. A lot of people sell sick birds...either knowingly or unknowingly.
Make sure you are prepared to deal with bringing home a disease before you add birds to your flock. Most people learn the hard way.
