I’m new and want multiple breeds so I can tell my ladies apart! I’m finding I have to buy 3 of the same? How do I get what I want? I’m ordering 8-9 chicks. Any suggestions?
So glad you decided to join us. Check around at all the different hatcheries and maybe you can find more of a variety. Feed stores often carry chicks in the spring although generally they mix males and females together in the bins.
You can check Craigslist, Facebook groups and even local 4-H clubs for chicks.
I just ran into the same problem as only one hatchery has buff silkies and buying 3 of them is fine, but they have a 5 chick minimum of the same ones. When I'm ready, I'm going to post in a local Facebook poultry group I'm in to see if someone will go in on them with me, and maybe get more for them, and then we'd split the shipping, and also, in my state group here. Here's the link to find yours, and you could try there too if you like that idea. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/find-your-states-or-your-countrys-thread.270925/
Lots of other good ideas I saw above too! Good luck!
Welcome to BYC. You better build a bigger coop- you won't want to give any of them up.
I have found that once I get to know them, I can tell my girls or guys of the same breed apart. They always have some individual trait or another.
