Our neighbor had a chicken that visited me daily until she died two weeks ago. I miss her so I’ve decided to look into raising chickens of my own. We have an unused shed I think we can convert to a chicken house and create a run. We have 4 acres and two dogs. I foster kittens too. A friend recommended this site. She has 59 chickens.

Welcome. I am so sorry your visiting chicken friend died. You have the right idea with a shed - the bigger the better for your coop and your run. However, big is only good if it is secure. Inspect the shed for any holes. Fix the wood if they are low, and use hardware cloth to cover holes if they are high (increased ventilation). If you can, bring your shed up 18-24 inches off the ground and surround the perimeter of the coop and run with 1/2 inch hardware cloth. Make sure the run protects the chickens from aerial predators as well. I use a hawk net for a 50x60 foot area that has hardware cloth fencing, but hawk net ceilings for when we are home. If we are not home, they are in a smaller hard top covered run with 1/2 inch hardware cloth walls and an apron and full access to the coop.
