Thanks so much for the add to the group/page/gurus of fowl education! Not a very new CEO of the coop, but still very wet behind the ears. I've had my girls for 3yrs. Unfortunately for our little click, 2 of my girls have passed. Louise passed during the summer heat wave, I truly believe of heat exhaustion. My sweet Thelma passed unexpectedly two nights ago, inside her nesting box in the coop. She passed quietly in her sleep. She looked very peaceful. She was just nearing the end of her winter moult, feathers were growing in beautifully. Cruelly, this leaves my third chickie girl, Henrietta (I call her Henry for short) alone. I initially referenced your article about grieving hens, then became fascinated with your entire content. Again, I appreciate you welcoming me here and I look forward to meeting you all, and hopefully gaining the wisdom I need from the community here! Henry and I hope you enjoy us also!🐔🐤🐓🐣

I'm very sorry about Louise and Thelma. I'm sure Henrietta feels their loss as keenly as you do.

While it's true that Henry will benefit from having friends, it's likely going to be tough to find suitable roommates right away. New flock additions should be quarantined to make sure Henry stays safe and well, then there will be some integration time to see if everyone is compatible. Hatchery chicks are unlikely to bring disease, but you'll want to wait until they are old enough to hold their own with an adult hen.

In the meantime, I would spend more time with Henry. I've been told that adding a mirror or a stuffed toy can help ease her loneliness, but I've not had much success with either.

It's sad that an unpleasant situation brought you to BYC but this is a great community of supportive folks who will try their best to help you through your challenges and cheer your successes. Welcome to BYC!

Sorry for your loss.
