Is 1/2" recommended to keep larger snakes out also? It seems like an overkill otherwise.
We only have garden snakes so not sure what you mean by larger snakes. It's 1/2" squares, so any snake larger than 1/2" wide can't get through there. They do make it 1/4" but that's "overkill" for most of us as the point of it is to keep ALL varments out, including fox, raccoons, opossums, dogs, bobcats, skunks, etc. some of whom dig.

It is not an overkill at all. Most of us have weasels and minks to deal with and they can get in anything bigger than an inch. They are ferocious and ruthless predators.

Possums and rats can get through anything they can get their head into. Trust me, you don't want to hear your hen screaming (it sounds like a women screaming ), go outside to find a possum is eating her. I arrived in time, our girl just had all of the skin pulled from her right thigh (and eaten, the possum still had a mouth full of feathers). Her thigh was exposed muscle, we cleaned it and kept it moisturized with Neosporin. It took about 3 months for the skin to grow back. That was about 1 1/2 years ago, she runs and plays with her friends like nothing ever happened. (Although the skin grew back from her butt skin, so now her right thigh has those fluffy butt feathers on it. :lau

My flock has grown.

This is my coop I still need to nail some boards along the top to secure the wire but it's usable now.

It looks very nice! I love the nest boxes outside entry that's still protected. Beautiful chickens! Thank you for sharing! :love
